For 4th and 5th grade classes, it is very important that my students are responsible and always bring their art journals/sketchbooks to art class every week, as well as their supplies. I allowed flexibility for the first 9 weeks because I know how hard it is as a parent to keep track of what our children need to have for school.
However, starting at the 2nd 9 weeks (beginning Oct 29th) students in 4th and 5th grade will receive a "participation" grade which will be averaged into their overall 9-week grade. If a student neglects to bring their supplies week after week, points may be taken off the participation grade.
The art journal/sketchbook serves two purposes: 1. To act as a starting point for art creation, where students can sketch and plan their ideas before they start a project in class. 2. It can be used for quiet drawing time when students finish before the majority of the class. It ensures that my students will never be bored.
Art journals can be either: a simple subject folder (like the ones you bought for their other subjects). They don't need paper, I can provide that for them. OR, if the student is interested in art, or would like to take art further in the future, a simple sketchbook or drawing pad (no larger than 9x12") can be used instead.

Welcome to a New Year of Creativity!
Welcome parents and students to a brand new year of art creation at John I. Smith K-8 Center! I'm certainly excited to return to the art room with exciting projects and active students.
This is the year of Recycled (or the new trendy word, "up-cycled") Art, as we try to gather recyclable materials from around the house and donate them to the Art room. Please take a moment to click on the "Wishlist" tab at the top of this page to see what awesome items you can bring that can be used to create amazing artwork. Most of it won't cost you or your parents a thing, as they are simply items around the house that would more than likely end up in the land fill.
Our students hit the ground running this week, working on their portfolios and moving towards our next project, "Op Art."
