Fifth Graders Create Diecut City Skylines

Mrs. Rios' class has been diligently working on these wonderful skylines inspired by this blog post. We first discussed the differences between the old world buildings of Europe versus the modern-day skyscrapers all over the world. This is a great study delving in to the world of architecture and they've been having a great time so far!

We used our brand new digital projector generously donated by Chevron via DonorsChoose.org where the students were able to see some of the artist's examples online and see photographs from cities around the world for inspiration.

Students were first given a long sheet of semi-translucent drawing paper and given instructions on how to use pens for their line drawing. We discussed different shading techniques such as hatching, cross-hatching, scribbling and stippling.

Once their drawings were complete they were directed to cut their skyline leaving around 1/8" paper bordering their pieces. Next week they'll wrap them into cylinders and attach to a round card stock base.

We're currently looking for someone who can donate about 20 battery-operated votive candles so that we can attach them to these to create beautiful paper table lanterns. If you'd like to donate please comment below or send a note with your child! Thank you!
